Supply Shortages Drive Surge in Assam Vegetable and Pulse Prices Amid New Procurement Cycle

Assam faces a sharp rise in essential commodity prices as Lentil (Masur) and vegetable rates soar above benchmarks in the 2026-27 cycle. With Masur trading at ₹9,082 per quintal and tomato supplies tightening, this market report analyzes the supply-demand gap impacting all districts and the resulting economic pressure on consumers across the state.

Market dynamics across Assam have taken a sharp turn as a tightening supply chain pushes the prices of essential commodities significantly above their base benchmarks. According to the latest market data for the 2026-27 period, the state's agricultural landscape is grappling with a notable disparity between Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and actual retail valuations. The most striking escalation is seen in the pulses sector, specifically for Lentil (Masur), which is currently trading at an average of ₹9,082.61 per quintal. This market rate represents a substantial premium over the government-mandated MSP of ₹6,700.00, reflecting a high demand that continues to outpace the modest arrival of 103 to 115 metric tonnes across district hubs.

The volatility is equally pronounced within the vegetable segment, where staples like onions and tomatoes are witnessing frequent price fluctuations. Onions are currently hovering around the ₹2,500 mark, peaking at ₹2,687.96 per quintal, despite a relatively healthy arrival volume of over 480 metric tonnes. Tomatoes, however, present a more precarious situation for consumers; despite a lower arrival volume of just 83 metric tonnes in the latest cycle, prices have surged to nearly ₹2,562 per quintal. This imbalance suggests that localized supply disruptions are heavily influencing the daily cost of living for residents across all districts of Assam.

Potato prices remain the only relatively stable factor in the current market report, trading consistently between ₹1,175 and ₹1,221 per quintal. While administrative officials monitor these trends to ensure market stability, the current data underscores a broader trend of inflationary pressure on kitchen essentials. As the 2026-27 procurement season progresses, the gap between official price floors and real-world trading costs highlights the challenges of maintaining food security and price predictability in a region sensitive to logistical constraints and seasonal harvest variations.
